Lesson 3 – Nouns & Articles in Spanish

1 · What Is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. In Spanish every noun has a grammatical gender — either masculine or feminine — and that gender is not optional or random: it shapes every article, adjective, and pronoun around it. Learning a noun means learning its gender at the same time.

Best habit from day one: Always memorize a noun together with its article: not just hotel but el hotel; not just habitación but la habitación. This locks in gender automatically.

2 · Gender: Masculine & Feminine

Unlike English, Spanish nouns are either masculine (M) or feminine (F). There are reliable patterns — not perfect rules, but they work for 80–90% of words you'll encounter.

Masculine — typical endings

-o: el pasaporte, el vuelo, el precio passport, flight, price
-or: el ascensor, el aeropuerto lift, airport
-aje: el equipaje, el viaje, el pasaje luggage, trip, fare
-án / -ón: el avión, el camión plane, truck
Days, months, numbers: el lunes, el enero
Words from Greek ending in -ma: el problema, el programa, el idioma

Feminine — typical endings

-a: la habitación → wrong! — but la cama, la mesa, la maleta bed, table, suitcase
-ción / -sión: la reservación, la estación, la pensión reservation, station, guesthouse
-dad / -tad: la ciudad, la libertad city, freedom
-ez / -eza: la belleza, la naturaleza beauty, nature
-umbre: la costumbre, la cumbre custom, summit
-ie: la serie, la superficie series, surface

⚠ Important Exceptions to memorize

el agua (F) · el águila (F) — feminine nouns starting with stressed a- use el in singular to avoid the "la a" sound clash
el mapa map — ends in -a but masculine
el día day — ends in -a but masculine
el sofá, el tranvía sofa, tram — ends in -a but masculine
la mano hand — ends in -o but feminine
la foto, la moto photo, motorbike — shortened feminine words
el hotel, el papel, el árbol hotel, paper, tree — ends in consonant, masculine

3 · Definite Articles — "The"

The definite article (the) has four forms in Spanish depending on the gender and number of the noun. Use it when referring to something specific or already known.

Definite — "the"

Masc. singular	el	el vuelo — the flight
Fem. singular	la	la maleta — the suitcase
Masc. plural	los	los vuelos — the flights
Fem. plural	las	las maletas — the suitcases

Indefinite — "a / some"

Masc. singular	un	un taxi — a taxi
Fem. singular	una	una habitación — a room
Masc. plural	unos	unos billetes — some tickets
Fem. plural	unas	unas maletas — some suitcases

When to use definite vs. indefinite

Definite (el/la): specific thing both speaker and listener know — Dame la llave. Give me the key. (a specific key)
Indefinite (un/una): introducing something new or non-specific — Quiero una habitación. I want a room. (any room)
No article: with professions after ser — Soy médico. I am a doctor.
No article: after tener in some fixed phrases — Tengo fiebre. I have a fever.
Special contraction: a + el = al and de + el = del — Voy al aeropuerto. Vengo del hotel.

4 · Making Nouns Plural

The three plural rules

Ends in a vowel → add -s: vuelo → vuelos, maleta → maletas, taxi → taxis
Ends in a consonant → add -es: hotel → hoteles, avión → aviones, ciudad → ciudades
Ends in -z → change to -ces: lápiz → lápices, vez → veces

⚠ Accent mark changes in plural

avión → aviones — accent dropped because stress shifts naturally
estación → estaciones — accent dropped
joven → jóvenes — accent added to keep stress on same syllable
Words ending in -s in singular stay the same: el lunes → los lunes

6 · Noun + Adjective Agreement (Introduction)

In Spanish, adjectives come after the noun (usually) and must match its gender and number. If the noun is feminine plural, the adjective must also be feminine plural.

Agreement pattern

Masc. singular: un hotel caro an expensive hotel
Fem. singular: una habitación cara an expensive room
Masc. plural: unos hoteles caros some expensive hotels
Fem. plural: unas habitaciones caras some expensive rooms
Adjectives ending in -e or consonant: same form for M and F, only plural changes: el vuelo puntual → los vuelos puntuales

7 · The Two Mandatory Contractions

These are the only contractions in Spanish and they are not optional — you must always use them.

a + el = al

Voy al aeropuerto. I'm going to the airport.
Llamo al médico. I'm calling the doctor.
Vamos al hotel. We're going to the hotel.

de + el = del

Vengo del aeropuerto. I'm coming from the airport.
El precio del billete. The price of the ticket.
La llave del cuarto. The key of/to the room.

⚠ No contraction with "el" as part of a proper name

Voy a El Cairo. NOT "al Cairo" — El Cairo is a proper name
Vengo de El Salvador. NOT "del Salvador"
